# Historical Recognized Environmental Condition (HREC)

A historical recognized environmental condition is a past release addressed to the satisfaction of regulators that meets unrestricted use criteria, so the property carries no controls.

## Why it matters

An HREC is a closed issue with no remaining restrictions. It still appears in the Phase I because it is part of the property's history. If standards change or new information appears, the status can be revisited.
