# Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC)

Hydrofluorocarbons are synthetic refrigerants and other chemicals with high global warming potential that EPA is phasing down and restricting in specific uses under the AIM Act.

## Why it matters

HFCs are in many air conditioners, chillers and refrigeration systems. EPA's Technology Transitions program sets limits by equipment type with compliance dates. These rules affect repair costs, replacement timing and the value of aging equipment.
