Knob-and-Tube Wiring

Knob-and-tube wiring is an early electrical system, used from the 1800s to about the 1930s, with wires run through ceramic knobs and tubes and no ground conductor.

Why it matters

It is considered a fire hazard because it is ungrounded and prone to damage from age and past renovations. Insulation placed over it can trap heat. Insurers and lenders may require replacement or an electrician's evaluation.
