# Remaining Useful Life (RUL)

Remaining useful life is a subjective opinion of the number of years an item, component or system can function as intended before it needs replacement.

## Why it matters

RUL drives the timing of replacement in a reserve table. ASTM E2018 notes it is affected by quality, maintenance, climate and use, and is not a guarantee. Different assessors can reach different RUL opinions.
