Means of Egress

A means of egress is a continuous, unobstructed path from any point in a building to a public way, made up of the exit access, the exit and the exit discharge.

Why it matters

Blocked exits, missing lighting and doors that do not open as required are common findings. Historic and older buildings may have egress paths that no longer meet current practice. Fixing egress can involve stairs, doors and fire-rated walls.
