Building Envelope

The building envelope is the outer elements of a building, above and below ground, that divide the exterior from the interior environment, including exterior walls, windows, doors, roofs and subfloors.

Why it matters

The envelope controls water, air and heat. Failures in roofs, walls, windows and sealants cause many moisture and energy problems. Envelope repairs often make up a large share of a building's capital plan.
