Fair Housing Act (FHA)

The Fair Housing Act is a federal law that prohibits discrimination in housing, including discrimination based on disability, and sets accessibility requirements for certain multifamily housing built after 1991.

Why it matters

Multifamily buyers and lenders check for accessible routes, entrances and unit features. ASTM E2018 includes an optional abbreviated FHA screening in an appendix. Note that FHA here means Fair Housing Act, not the Federal Housing Administration.
