Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards (UFAS)

The Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards are federal design standards for accessibility under the Architectural Barriers Act, also referenced for housing programs that receive federal financial assistance.

Why it matters

For housing subject to HUD's Section 504 rules, design and alterations must conform to UFAS or the 2010 ADA Standards, with limited exceptions HUD has identified. Capital needs assessments often screen for these items alongside ADA and Fair Housing Act rules. Accessible unit counts and features can drive repair scope.
